ItachunaRajbari
is also known by another name-“BargeeDanga”. The Maratha warriors were called
Bargees by Bengalis and the name “BargeeDanga” has been inspired by this. Once
upon a time, Bengal was attacked by the Marathas repeatedly, for collection of
25% of the tax payable by the Nawab of Bengal, Bihar, and Orissa, which was
known as Chauth. The decline of the iconic Mughal Empire started after the end
of the Aurangzeb era. Between 1742-1752, under the leadership of BhaskarPandit
and RaghuramBhosle, the Bargees started attacking Bengal. Later switched to
Medinipur, Katwa, a place near Hooghly, was previously the center.
Although
the attacks from the Maratha warriors halted after the death of Mir Habib, by
then Orissa was under their control, which resulted in many Maratha warriors
deciding to stay back in Bengal and start trading in there, by which they
became quite wealthy. The Kundans were among these Maratha warriors, now known
as Kundu have settled there, whose ancestry dates back to these Maratha
warriors. Ancestors of one of these Kundus, Shri Safallya Narayana Kundu, built
the ItachunaRajbari in 1766.
